The Nantahala Open ...

...and YOU are THERE!

At this distance and low resolution, can you really say for sure that this isn't me, launching from the railroad tracks?

Or, for that matter, that this isn't me riding an air mattress over "The Falls"?

The Nantahala is a relatively docile whitewater river, which is good because our kayaks aren't really built for anything wilder. We went out yesterday with a couple of guys who have been down several times, which was good because though we'd done this stretch in a raft before, we hadn't done it in our own boats. It was also the day of Nantahala Open, put on by one of the outfitters to see who can do the best run over The Falls, the biggest rapid on this stretch. As a whitewater newbie, the only trick I actually accomplished was a brief "surf", which is just paddling back up against a rapid and trying to stay balanced. While the trick itself is rather dull, I've enhanced the video of myself to make it more "extreme".
